Wie es dazu kam, dass ich Shaker sammel, habe ich bereits in einem meiner ersten Posts erwähnt. Warum ich sammle kristallisierte sich aber erst in einem Seminar heraus, das ich vor Kurzem besuchte. Es war ein sogenanntes "Sales Coaching", in dem ich lernen sollte Produkte noch besser zu verkaufen und den tieferen Sinn der Einwände des Kunden zu erkennen und entsprechend zu begegnen.
Teil des Seminars war es auch den Unterschied zwischen Bedarf und Bedürfnis zu lernen.
Zu diesem Zweck führten wir untereinander Interviews über private Dinge und suchten das Thema, das den Interviewpartner wohl am meisten interessierte.
Mein Partner stieß also sehr früh auf meine Vorliebe für Shaker und fand somit sein Thema.
Nun galt es für Ihn das Bedürfnis dahinter zu entdecken und zu analysieren, warum mein Bedarf an Shakern so hoch war.
Erster Versuch: Ich würde versuchen mit dem Sammeln eine Wertanlage zu schaffen, auch die ich im Notfall zurückgreifen könnte.
Nunja, dies ist natürlich ein interessanter Nebeneffekt, aber nicht der Grund warum ich sammle.
Zweiter Versuch: Mir ginge es um den Besitz und den Wusch alle Shakerarten unter einem Dach zu vereinen.
Auch nicht schlecht, aber das würde bedeuten, dass ich jeden Shaker haben wollte, den ich sehe und das ist nicht der Fall
Dritter Versuch: Es ginge um den Besitz von Informationen, Hintergründe und Geschichte von Gegenständen und die Shaker dienen mehr als Anschauungs- und Trainingsmaterial.
nanu? sicher hatte ich mir schon oft Gedanken gemacht, wieso ich sammel aber so treffend hatte ich es noch nie formulieren können.
Übertragen auf diesen Blog bedeutet das, dass ich diese Informationen hier sammel, für euch zusammentrage und euch zur Verfügung stelle, weil es mir ein Bedürfnis ist, die Informationen mit euch zu teilen. Ihr dürft euch also geschmeichelt fühlen. ;)

Interview with Shawn Soole
Personal information:
Shawn Soole, 13 years in the bartending business. Executive Bar Keep at Clive’s Classic Lounge in the Chateau Victoria in Victoria, BC. Freelance writer, bar tool designer and Cocktail Compeition MC and Judge.
How did you get started collecting?
My wife bought me a silver cocktail shaker a few years back from my birthday. A couple of months ago, I started seriously collecting and now am a little addicted.
How many shakers do you have and how do you store them?
About 30 shakers and 7 or so Soda Siphons. I have them on display in my dining room, they are starting to take over that area.
Which is the oldest and which did you buy last?
I have a few Norwegian Pewter from the turn of the century and I love the 1934 Chicago’s World Fair shaker. The last one I bought was a 1960’s Thirst Extinguisher, my wife says I have to slow down because I seem to buy a new one every week. Victoria is rife with antique stores.
Which is your favorite shaker and why? And do you have one with a personal story?
My second shaker is probably my favorite shaker, it’s a 1910’s Galatoff Pewter Shaker, I bought it for $14 and its worth alo tmore than that. Apparently there is no record of Galatoff making shakers so that’s kind of cool. My second favorite is my new one, the Thirst Extinguisher; it plays a song from a wind up music box in the base when you pick it up.
Is there still a cocktail shaker or bar item you have heard about but never seen? Something like the Holy Grail of Shakers?
The sacred Bell shaker and I do love the Gun Catridge style that I know Sven Alleming has. I have bidded on a few hard to find ones in the past online but never have been lucky enough to get it in the end.
What do you think about modern bar design; i.e.; the Flip Top shaker by Metrokane?
I always say “if its not broken, don’t fix it”. Boston, Cobblers and Parisan are all you need behind the bar. Don’t fool with perfection.
Do you think reproducing vintage shakers is a good idea?
Absolutely. Being able to get some reproductions to use behind the bar is a dream come true especially with the cocktail renaissance still going in full force.
What are your future projects and plans.
Really focusing on Clive’s, between our Spirited Weekends and running the beverage program, it is a full time job. I am still going to be writing for the magazines I write for now and otherwise just enjoy being behind the bar for as long as possible.

Jugend forscht - Cocktail Maschine
Vor einiger Zeit hatte ich über ein "Jugend Forscht"-Projekt berichtet, in dem eine Cocktailmaschine gebaut werden sollte. Nun ist sie fertig und unten findet ihr zwei Videos dazu. Denkt dran: Der Forscherdrang steht hier im Vordergrund...

Handbemalte Shaker - Einzelstücke, oder?
Fast jeder hat schon mal einen handbemalten Shaker gesehen und man kann davon ausgehen, dass es sich dabei um Einzelstücke handelt.
Was aber, wenn man in die Wohnung eines Freundes geht und dort den gleichen Shaker nochmal sieht?
So bei mir geschehen. Der Fernsehabend war gelaufen.
Ich fuhr nach Hause, holte den entsprechenden Shaker und wir nahmen die Beiden unter die Lupe.
Glas und Verschlüsse? Identisch
Farben? Gleich
Design? Wie vermutet identisch
In diesem Moment kamen Zweifel hoch, dass es es doch nur um industriell bedruckte Stücke handeln könnte.
Also holten wie eine Lupe raus und sahen uns alles noch mal genauer an.
Tatsächlich konnten wir nun feine Striche auf der Farbe sehen, die von Pinselborsten zu stammen scheinen.
Auch kleine Unregelmäßigkeiten in der Strichführung entgingen uns nicht.
Aber wie kann das kommen?
Wahrscheinlich wurden diese Shaker tatsächlich industriell hergestellt, dann aber per Hand bemalt.
Wer von euch hat schon mal ähnliches erlebt?
